HISTORY
We look back on a century worth of history at OHGA Pharmacy with photographs.
The one-of-a-kind history of overcoming difficulties, changing business formats, adapting to change, and making
changes with the staff at OHGA Pharmacy.
Origin of OHGA Pharmacy
1902 (Meiji 35)
Founded by Kaso Ohga, at Futsukaichi, Chikushino City.
Kaso Ohga (current president's great-grandfather) took the first step by opening "Ohga Shoten" in front of Futsukaichi Station (a steam locomotive stop) with three employees at the young age of 14. The store was about 100 tsubo (330m2), and it was a store similar to the current supermarket, with everything from medicine and cosmetics to sake, rice, tobacco, groceries, and clothing. At that time, we buckled down, and got our hands dirty to get the job done while on our feet with straw sandals and ran around not only in Fukuoka prefecture but also in Saga and Kumamoto. Efforts at that time laid the foundation for a major leap forward at a later date.
1909 (Meiji 42)
Obtained a license of Pharmacy.
Under the "Pharmaceutical Affairs Law (current Pharmaceutical Affairs Law)" promulgated in 1887, the necessary knowledge and experience were recognized, and he was certified as a "pharmaceutical trader" and obtained a license. From around this time, we will move forward as a store specializing in pharmaceutical products.

As a drug wholesaler in blue ocean
1927 (Showa 2)
Opened a drug wholesaler in Tenjin-cho , Fukuoka City
(currently Fukuoka Bank Head Office).
At that time, the commercial center of Fukuoka City was Kawabata-dori, but when Kaso saw Fukuoka Station on the Kyushu Railway (Currently Nishi-Nippon Railroad), which opened in 1924, he was convinced that "the commercial center would be Tenjin-cho." Three years later, he entered Tenjin-cho, narrowed down the items to medicines and foods, and became the sole agent in Kyushu, a pharmaceutical company that was a leading manufacturer at the time. The number of clerks has increased to about 20, the handcart became a car, and sandals became shoes. He started to play an active part as a wholesaler throughout Kyushu. A few years later, "Iwataya" opened in Tenjin-cho, proving that his belief was correct. This was the heyday of the magnificent era.
But who expected it? In 1945, a pharmaceutical company went bankrupt. Since he was devoting himself to one manufacturer, the damage was great, and he was forced to close the wholesaling business, which was a difficult situation. However, without giving up on the future, Kaso immediately moved the store to the front of the university in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka (currently in front of Kyushu University Hospital) and opened it as a retail pharmacy. This is the beginning of a pharmacy.

In the era of "war"
1941 (Showa 16)
Eiichi the miraculous safe return.
In 1945, participated in World War II. Eiichi was dispatched as a soldier. Meanwhile, Kaso prayed for the safety of his only son, Eiichi, while protecting the store in front of the university. The end of the war was reached in August 1945, but Eiichi, who was the commander of the Army Major, was left as a war criminal in a distant land of Indochina. Since there was no news at all, everyone already gave up on Eiichi's survival, but around May 1946, he was demobilized without any notice. It could only be called a miracle. Of the ten officer war criminals, eight were hanged and only two survived. Nobody knew the exact reason, but it was conceivable that during the war there were more than 20 prisoners of war officers, and Eiichi sometimes gave them alcohol and cigarettes, and exchanged not only the latest information on the war but also information about their business in the United States.
Eventually, he was defeated, and when he was taken prisoner and called to the court, the officer was among the judges. It was thought that the officers made positive statements, and nobody thought of any other reason to help. "One good turn deserves another" Eiichi said.
To step into blue ocean, as a drug wholesaler
1946 (Showa 21),
Kaso and Eiichi started their careers.
The two pillars of Kaso and Eiichi were finally ready. We switched the sword to trade abacus and built-up foundation of business. Delivery to the wholesaler was slow, so we went to pick it up from here, took great care not to run out, and gradually increased our credibility. The appearance of switching swords to abacus and devoting himself to the business was felt, and sales increased remarkably, and it was said that sales during this period increased five times in two years. In this way, while the store in front of the university prospered, Kaso and Eiichi continued to hold the belief that "the center of business will be Tenjin-cho."

Re-entering the long-sought Tenjin Downtown
1949 (Showa 24)
Opened a store in the Nishitetsu Street where you can buy anything.
Shortly after the war, Eiichi and Masako re-entered Tenjin-cho, the land of their dreams, in November of this year. The "Nishitetsu Street Stores" was opened at the entrance of the Nishitetsu Street (currently Tenjin-Core Building) and was very prosperous. The first floor was a pharmacy, the second floor was an office, and the third floor was a residence. The store opens at 7:30 and closes at midnight. The motto of the new store was "a store with everything, a store that was not out of stock, a store that sells new products". It was the only store in the city that handled imported chemicals and had a large number of foreign customers, so it did business by gesturing and gesturing. Kenichi slept in a "careful posture", waiting for his parents to work until late at night. As a child, Kenichi thought our parents who worked hard.
Around this time, Kaso operated the "University Mae Store", and Eiichi and Masako were in charge of managing the store in Nishitetsu Street. Then, taking the opportunity of entering Nishitetsu Street, it became a corporate organization, and the company name was changed to "OHGA Pharmacy Co., Ltd." Eiichi also focused on clerk education, and thoroughly conducted etiquette and counting education as well as product knowledge. In addition to education only at OHGA Pharmacy, he created a clerk school for clerk in the entire shopping district and became the principal himself and focused on education. It is common sense now, but at that time, there was still no interest in clerk education. In a chaotic era after the end of the war, where we did not know the future, we would look to the future and aim for the ideal figure as a pharmacy under the corporate motto of "OHGA Pharmacy serving beauty and health" and "Service is our duty". Eiichi's strenuous appearance stood out in the pharmaceutical industry.

Branch offices were opened at Tenjin - cho Market
(currently Fukuoka Bank Head Office).
In February of this year, we secured the same place as when we were a wholesaler and opened a store. The Tenjin - cho Market store, an innovative American-style pharmacy with a pharmacy on the first floor and a coffee room (Soda fountain) on the second floor, was opened. At that time, there were no pharmacies with coffee shops in Kyushu, only two in Tokyo. It was well-received and prosperous as a specialty store where you took delicious coffee. However, in August 1955, it was destroyed by fire. The fire spreads throughout the Tenjin-cho Market, and more than half of the market (60 stores) is extinguished. According to the newspaper at that time, the cause of the fire was the ignition of the next pachinko parlor.

A bag store is added to the "Nishitetsu-Street store".
Increasingly, the entire Nishitetsu gai district became prosperous. Cigarettes were also sold at the corner, and the number of cigarettes sold was the highest in Fukuoka. In December of this year, OHGA Pharmacy expanded its store and added a bag store. We choosed the bag store because it was a non-competitive industry in the shopping district. Masako was in charge of bag business, who had only experience of medicine market. We went to Tokyo and Osaka every month to purchase. Thanks to the effort, the performance of the bag store was improved, sometimes surpassing the pharmacy. Masako learned that "there is nothing better than effort", and from that point on, she believed in "the importance of continuing to effort hard."
1961 (Showa 36)
With the opening of the stores, the company expanded.
The three years from 1958 were the time of the great transformation of OHGA Pharmacy. The scale of the company expanded as it opened stores one after another, mainly in the Tenjin area. In November, the Nishitetsu Premire Shopping Stores (currently Solaria Stage) opened. The "Nishitetsu Premier Shopping Store" with a pharmacy and a bag store was opened there.
Due to the fierce competition in this district, it was very difficult to secure land. Many people hurry at the station terminal, so I thought of OHGA Pharmacy as a service station and managed it with the motto "quick". By shortening the customer service time and increasing the number of rotations, it became possible to attract a considerable number of customers.

Realizing the dream of a dispensing pharmacy
1962 (Showa 37)
Opened the "Fukuoka Building Medicine Center" with a full-scale dispensing facility.
In January, "Fukuoka Building Medicine Center" was opened. The store was opened in place of the "Tenjin-cho Market Store" that was lost in the fire in 1954. We were able to open a store in a prime location in Tenjin because Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co., Ltd., who was watching Eiichi's leadership as Chairman of Nishitetsu Street Association, invited us to move into the first floor of the Fukuoka Building. At that time, it was a large-scale pharmacy with an area of about 45 tsubo(150m2) and a full-scale dispensing facility. In 1936 of the previous year, Eiichi visited the prescription dispensing pharmacy "Mizuno Pharmacy" in front of the University of Tokyo. After studying the actual situation in detail, he envisioned the appearance of dispensing pharmacies in not having the idea separation of pharmacy and clinic, and immediately took action. It was a big business with a big decision at that time. Despite the criticism and worries of those around him, it was said that Eiichi's decision through his decisive belief was the driving force behind the subsequent leap of OHGA Pharmacy. Just in 1936, the universal health insurance system was started in Japan.
While having a dispensing room, they also sold sweets and miscellaneous goods imported from the United States. We also created a cosmetics corner, aiming for a drugstore format that was not available in Japan at that time. A few years later, Kenichi returned after working in Tokyo and stand on top of a box of tissue paper at the store to attract customers. In addition, a 100-yen uniform sales floor, which was rare at that time, was created, and the products sold like crazy. Shiseido, Kanebo, Kose, Max Factor, Albion, and Covermark cosmetics were also sold. Nobody knew the facts that Eiichi's body was changed since around 1936. However, when he went outside, he hit the employee's shoulder energetically. He also went up to the rooftop of Iwataya, observed the flow of people in Tenjin-cho, and devised future measures. In November 1937, Eiichi's cancer was discovered, and he was hospitalized.

Eiichi died, Masako act as president
1964 (Showa 39)
Eiichi dies at the young age of 51 due to cancer.
In January, Eiichi, then managing director, died of cancer at the young age of 51. At this time, Masako was entrusted with management as acting president instead of Kaso who was old. The number of employees was about 80. About 250 people, including the family members of employees, live on the shoulders of the manager. Masako couldn't afford to cry or moan when she thought so. Masako's children were still junior high school, elementary school, and kindergarten students.
Then, in September 1941, two years after Eiichi's death, Kaso died at the age of 78. Immediately after that, Masako was appointed president. When Eiichi was in the hospital, Eiichi taught Masako at the bedside the philosophy, morals, and points of counting management, as if he had sensed his death. Masako worked hard to write down the words in a notebook hidden under the bed. The notes at that time supported Masako after taking office as president.
Passionate about opening a dispensing pharmacy
1966 (Showa 41)
Masako became president. Inheriting Eiichi's wishes, she started to expand store openings.
While rumors were flowing that "OHGA will be out of business," Masako inherited Eiichi's wishes and started to take an expanding trend. Following Eiichi's way, she took over the store opening policy and started up. When in doubt, took out the notebook with Eiichi's words on the bed, which was called Masako's bible, and turned over the page that says, "Maintaining the status quo means only a setback for companies. “and blown out. Also, she got the most necessary ally herself at that time. Mr. Hideaki Iwakiri, a certified public accountant, joined the company at the recommendation of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited as a counting management professional. In addition, as a consultant, I was able to obtain the advice of Mr. Toichi Kuroiwa, and the system of the headquarters was set up.
1975 (Showa 50)
Opened 6 dispensing pharmacies, making the best use of his career as a pharmacist.
Eiichi's vision for the future was a strong awareness of "dispensing" and "cosmetics." Inheriting this will, Masako was passionate about opening a dispensing pharmacy. She visited medical institutions many times, persistently talked about her dream of the idea separation of pharmacy and clinic and was able to develop a dispensing pharmacy. Thanks to Masako's efforts, she opened six stores in the 1950s and laid the foundation for dispensing pharmacy management. Masako was a pharmacist. She thought that managing a dispensing pharmacy was the right job for her. There was also a will as a pioneer of dispensing pharmacies that opened the "Fukuoka Building Medicine Center" in 1958. Eiichi's another dream, a store strategy centered on "cosmetics," shall be taken over by Kenichi. The roles of Masako and Kenichi were naturally separated.

The imported miscellaneous goods "Mokubakan" was opened in Tenjin Core Building.
In June, at the same time as the opening of the Tenjin Core Building, the "Tenjin Core Store" was opened on the first floor. Furthermore, on the first basement floor, an import miscellaneous goods store "Mokubakan" was opened. At "Mokubakan," OHGA was trying to handle unique accessories and cosmetics that nobody had seen before. After that, the concept of "a set of minors beats majors" and the handling of cosmetics was strengthened. This new attempt, "Mokubakan," was well received by young women at the time and was later expanded to the 4th floor of Tenjin Core. As a shop that tickles women's hearts, it has permeated Tenjin.
Laid the foundations for future development
1976 (Showa 51)
Following the opening of the "Tenjin Underground Shopping Center store"
September, Kenichi, who had a strong desire to enter the store at the same time as the completion of the Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, made a large investment and realized the entry. A large selection of cosmetics is available, and Shiseido, Kose, Kanebo, and Covermark beauty staff also enter the store. At the beginning of the opening, the dispatch was refused, saying, "Cosmetology staff cannot enter the pharmacy," but as the results grew, they began to cooperate.
Kenichi was intuitive, sharp, with sensitivity to understand needs while being daring, as the example passed on passed from Eiichi. As a result, the upfront investment of OHGA Pharmacy was incomparably larger than before. Kenichi's strategy was always bold in every aspect, such as opening new stores and renewing stores. Anyway, the tempo was fast. "Time will tell" Masako watched with feelings.
1979 (Showa 54)
Adopted the logo mark that will be the face of the new OHGA Pharmacy.
OHGA Pharmacy established a new logo mark that symbolizes the corporate philosophy. The logo mark designed by Masaru Sato, which is a combination of a heart that expresses sincerity and kindness and a cross that symbolizes medical care and charity, came to be called "Heart Cross" and is an indicator of what OHGA Pharmacy should aim for, it is a symbol mark that all employees are proud of.

The beginning of the drugstore era
1985 (Showa 60)
"Daigakumae Store" was renovated into a mini drugstore.
Kenichi, who was looking for a future pharmacy, visited the latest drugstore in the United States. Kenichi was fascinated by the business style of allowing customers to freely walk around the store and select products and took on the new challenge of being a “drug store”. As a first step, in December of this year, the "Daigakumae Store," which had been 57 years since its opening, was renovated into a "Minidrug Store".
1988 (Showa 63)
"Keyaki-dori store" opened.
Following the "Daigakumae Store", in February of this year, the "Keyaki Dori Store" was opened on Keyaki Dori in Akasaka, Chuo-ku, which is in the limelight as a luxury fashion spot. There were more than 10,000 items. Products that had the power to attract customers were incorporated into the product lineup. It has been a policy since the founder of OHGA Pharmacy, Kaso, to create a store that has everything centered on the needs of consumers. The drugstore "Keyaki-dori", which had everything, was reminiscent of "OHGA Shoten," which Kaso established in front of Futsukaichi Station 86 years ago. The specialty store orientation assembled by Eiichi and Masako seemed to return to their roots while being corrected by Kenichi.

Opened a store "Operetta" focusing narrow target.
In March, at the same time as the opening of Solaria Plaza, the "Operetta", which was mainly imported products, was opened. With its state-of-the-art fashionable appearance and unique imported cosmetics, it became a hot topic among fashion-conscious women. In April of the following month, the household goods "Fuzzy" was opened in Tenjin-IMS Building. It quickly realized the opening of a new category of stores.
The previous year (Showa 63) was 25th anniversary of Eiichi's death. In the wake of the January memorial service, Masako and Kenichi's family renewed their determination by thinking about the next generation. Masako always had courage when she thinks of Eiichi, who worked silently and ran through like a locomotive running in a straight line. She told herself, "I should do my best."
1990 (Heisei 2)
Kyushu's first large-scale drug store "Umi store" opened.
In May, "Umi store" was opened. It was the first full-scale drug store in Kyushu. The sales floor was over 160 tsubo (530m2) and is an Americanized drugstore with a parking lot, which was an innovative drugstore at that time. This was a store opened by Kenichi, overcoming the opposition of all executives. Introduced POS cash register for the first time. On the day of the store opening, customers lined up at all eight cash registers, and Kenichi and the staff experienced the height of excitement.

1994 (Heisei 6)
Opened large drug stores one after another.
In January, "Futatsuichi store" was opened. Similar to the "Umi store" that opened four years previously. This store had a sales floor area of about 170 tsubo (560m2) in combination with a supermarket. No one objected to the opening of the store at this time because the Umi store was growing steadily. After a while, it grew into a store with sales that surpassed that of the "Umi store".
Starting with the "Futatsuichi store," Kenichi accelerated the opening of drug stores in the suburbs. In June of the same year, the "Shirouzu store" was opened in Kamishirouzu, Kasuga City, and in June 1998, the "Shonai store" was opened in Ariyasu, Iizuka City. In the five years from this year, 10 drug stores were opened. It was an amazing speed of opening stores at that time.
These stores created the management base of OHGA Pharmacy and greatly contributed to growth and development. At the same time, prescription dispensing pharmacies continued to open. It was exactly the development on both wheels of the car. With the dispensing pharmacy that Masako had a hard time building as a pillar of credibility, Kenichi also actively promoted the idea separation of pharmacy and clinic.
Strengthening the three pillars of Tenjin
1999 (Heisei 11)
Opened "Solaria Stage Store".
In 1997, Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station moved to the south and Fukuoka Mitsukoshi opened in October of the same year. The appearance of the city was transformed into Tenjin, which has the greatest ability to attract customers in Kyushu. In April 1999, the store was opened in line with the completion of the Solaria Stage in the Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station Building.
"Fuku Building Store", "Tenjin Underground Shopping Center Store" and "Solaria Stage Store", three-pillar stores were strengthen sales in the Tenjin area. The predecessor of the "Solaria Stage Store" was the ""Nishitetsu Premier Shopping Store"opened by Eiichi. Eiichi firmly believed that retail was a “location industry.” This was because Eiichi knew that the handicap carried by the location conditions was a decisive negative factor in competing with other stores in the same industry. Currently, it has evolved further after 23 years of renovation, and the store name is "Life Stream" and it continues to operate.
Birth of a 24-hour reception pharmacy
2000 (Heisei 12)

The store was opened to fulfill its duties as a medical professional who supports the community.

The Start of a new store to apply the role of community
In December, instead of building a conventional dispensing pharmacy in front of a medical institution, for wide-area prescription demand a new store "Yoshizuka Station East Gate Store" opened. At the same time as creating a highly convenient store in front of the station, we provided safety and security as "My Pharmacy" and improved the degree of contribution to local customers and patients. Currently, it is the core store of the "My Pharmacy Project".

With the expansion of stores, the management philosophy was reviewed.
This year, a major change was made for OHGA Pharmacy. As the number of employees increases as the store scale expands, the idea that "employees are the property of OHGA Pharmacy and create customer satisfaction" has become clear. Therefore, the management philosophy was changed from "customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction" to "employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction."
It was not that there was no voice saying, "Employees come before customers." However, it was a change based on the unwavering belief that devoting all efforts to achieving employee satisfaction as a company would surely lead to customer satisfaction.

In November, the waiting room of the "Fuku Building Store Dispensing Room", which had been in business for 46 years since its opening in 1958, was renovated with the image of a space in the forest. We focused on creating a space where patients could feel more at home. The interior is a medication counter with the image of a stream, carpet with the image of soil, chairs and walls with the image of vegetation, and the pillars in the shape of a large tree are the most striking in the dispensing pharmacy. Also, we tried to decorate fresh flowers. Not only the appearance, but also the relaxation music played in the store is one of the features. In addition, a heartwarming picture book selected by the president himself is installed in the store. We devised so that not only children, but also adults can enjoy it. Various considerations are taken from one end of the store to the other.

In October, the dispensing pharmacy "Kyushu University Hospital East Gate Store" was opened on the site of Shinozaki Pharmacy in front of Kyushu University Hospital. In front of Kyushu University Hospital was a fierce battlefield with more than 10 pharmacies. Among them, it was possible to open the station in a prime location in front of the East Gate because of the opening of the "Daigakumae Store" in 1945. The store was opened by the founder, Ohga Kaso, instead of the Tenjin-cho store, which was unavoidably closed. The relationship with Shinozaki Pharmacy dates back to that time. "I want you to build a pharmacy where it was." Although it was an unthinkable request, Dr. Shinozaki was willing to accept the offer from OHGA Pharmacy, who had a close friendship with Eiichi and Masako.

Around this time, the renovation of existing stores began. As mentioned above, OHGA Pharmacy opened the first modern drugstore in Kyushu in 1990. Some stores were open for nearly 20 years, and in addition to the aging stores, the layout of the stores was reviewed to meet the needs of current customers.
